Leadership Coaching - Lessons In Defeat

So the fall-out from England's miserable World Cup campaign continues. This time its the Olympian Lord Coe offering his insights.

Fabio Capello & Leadership Coaching'I was depressed with the way we prepared,” he said. “I didn’t understand why you would want to take a team from sea level to altitude then back to sea level for a couple of friendlies''.

''Then they were back up to altitude, with long coach journeys, overnight flights and intense training at the wrong time of the season. They are the sort of things you’d seriously question an Olympic coach for doing and I can't see Dave Brailsford or Charles van Commenee doing that''.

Lord Coe is of course correct in his assessment. He makes it appear as if Fabio Capello doesnt know what he is doing. Certainly in the subtle area of how altititude and travel impact upon a performers physiology.

It suggests that Capello lacked the experience in how to prepare for a World Cup. Or the humility to ask for help in the areas where he was short of know-how.

Capello has been given a chance to learn from his South Africa failure. His self-examination must be frank and honest. He must recognise his own short-comings, and takes steps to turn his weaknesses into strengths. Perhaps using the services of a UK Leadership Coach, to conduct a thorough appraisal of his leadership style. So that maybe from out of this fiasco, the England manager re-groups with fresh insights and perspective.

But, if Fabio Capello thinks that Englands failure was caused by players alone, then nothing will have come from the 2010 World Cup under-performance.
