Leadership Coaching - Its No Laughing Matter!

Fabio Capello & Leadership CoachingIts a mere few hours after England have been put to the sword by a rampant uninhibited Germany at The World Cup.

A heavy cloud hangs over the English football nation. A mirror has been held up to its soul. Another generation of players has failed to deliver on the big stage.

The players are leaving their luxury aircraft heading for the hotel. First off the plane, is full-back Ashley Cole. He is laughing and smirking at an aside someone has made to him. Following him is under-achieving mid-fielder Frank Lampard. He is also grinning.

The national team have just gone out of the World Cup in embarassing fashion. A few hours later, players are smirking and grinning.

That moment alone highlights the lack of maturity in the England players. A lack of seriousness and inability to capture the mood of the nation.

For this was not a group of players playing for their country. They were playing for themselves. And having already established successful careers, they felt no pain in defeat. No sense of remorse. If they did, they would not be smirking and grinning.

Of course, it comes down to the management team, to create a culture whereby players do care. Do feel the nations joy and pain.

But when the English national team is managed by an Italian, can we really expect him to create a cause and mission that taps into true English values?

For without a true cause and mission, you are left with individual motivation. And when you have players as immature as Englands, then lack of unity wil hold sway.

This 2010 World Cup campaign will be known as a gross failure of leadership. Both on and off the pitch.
