So Fabio Capello is mystified by Englands shocking performance against Algeria. A goal-less draw that was characterised by England's lack of spark, energy and imagination. A listless display.
He suspected that World Cup pressure held sway. A view not supported by keeper David James.
Cappello's bafflement is a cause of concern. When a leader cannot diagnose why his team or organisation is not producing, then its time to move on.
It suggests that he does not have his finger on the pulse of his teams emotions. The dynamic that binds his players together. The small details...a look in the eye; an attitude; a mood; individual issues.
Sure, the manager cannot know everything. But his support team can. His staff should be able to read the mood of the camp, and address any concerns instantly.
Right now, the England players and management must have a full and frank discussion amongst themselves, to clear the air. Resolve the unresolved issues. Talk through the problems that are weighing them down.
If they don't, their World Cup campaign will grind to a halt. And Fabio Capello's reputation will take a massive hit.
