Leadership Strategies - The Matthew Maynard Effect

Glamorgan CCC

I was chatting to a Glamorgan CCC player recently, in my capacity as Leadership Coach. He told me something interesting.

At his previous club, when he was out to a poor shot, the coach would say to him 'xxxx shot!'. In a cynical voice. No support. No encouragement.

Undermining the players confidence. Making him feel that the coach was always waiting to make a critical remark.

However, since he moved to Glamorgan, he found none of this. Head coach Matt Maynard will wait some time after a batsman is out, before asking if the player wants to have a chat. Note, the coach asks the player.

If the player says no, then the coach trusts that the player knows what is wrong, and how to correct any issues. Thus the players thrive under such trust. Their confidence flourishes.

It takes a secure leader to do this. Secure in themselves. Not governed by fear or doubts. Which then get passed on to the players.

How do you act, when your staff make mistakes?
