Leadership Coaching - President Obama: Taking The Long View
It's President Obama appearing on America's most popular daytime TV show, 'The View'. He's talking about the secret behind his public persona of 'No Drama Obama'.
'The reason I seem calm all the time, is that I try and take the long view'. The President's long-view mindset is an invaluable one for all leaders to learn from.
For the long-view offers perspective. It offers an understanding that things can and will change. That in three or four years time, the crisis or drama that you are experiencing right now, will be forgotten.
The long-view encompasses your vision. The North Star you are aiming for. When you have a clear and believable vision, it can give you immunity from the travails of the moment. For it allows you to experience the future in the present.
When you hold a long-view, you will know that the journey you are on, will have its ups and downs. Barriers and challenges to overcome. So that when you do face adversity, you can do so calmly and without fuss.
Some leaders struggle to hold the long-view. That is because they dont find the time, to take a perspective away from the daily hustle and bustle of the business. They get caught up in doing 'stuff'.
As if taking time out, to consider perspectives and long-views is not real 'work'. Great. You might get lots done in the short-term. But without the long-view, do you know where you are leading your people to?
