Executive Coaching

The Leadership Blog

This leadership coaching blog, considers a remark made by the former Chancellor Of The Exchequer, Alistair Darling.

Executive Coaching - The Tesco Test

In his book, The Third Man, Peter Mandelson recalls a conversation with Alistair Darling. He tells of how the ex-Chancellor perceived the bleak mood of the nation, in the run-up to the last election.

Darling observed that,'You can tell just by going into Tesco's. People look away. They are embarassed'.

As a CEO and leader, how do you perceive the mood of your people? Can you walk through the canteen on any given day, and pick up the tell-tale signs, that let you know in an instant, the morale of the company?

The way people react when you walk in the room. Do they visibly stiffen; look the other way; ignore you? Or do they warm to you; want to come and share stories; catch your eye?

Or do you not notice. If not, why not? The Executive Coaching Test today, is to find a way of taking the temperature of your people. You might not like what you see. But the sooner you sniff out what's abroad, the faster you can turn things around.
