The Leadership Coach's Blog
This leadership coach's blog comes as England manager, Fabio Capello, publicly criticizes his bosses, The FA, over their strong stance on John Terry.
Football Leadership : Fabio Capello - I Disagree!
It's a turbulent time for England's football leadership. Firstly captain John Terry is stripped of the England captaincy by the FA, in the light of his impending summer court case.
Now, Fabio Capello has come out publicly, fundamentally disagreeing with the FA's stance. He believes that Terry is innocent until proven guilty, and therefore should remain as captain.
This is not how leadership should work. Manager and board should be working together out of a clear set of values, that leads to agreed decision-making.
In this case, the FA have determined that Terry is undermining the role of England captain. Capello doesn't see it that way. But surely that conversation should have taken place in private? Working through their different positions, until agreement was reached.
Here we have two different agendas at play. Capello will feel that the FA are making football decisions, that should be solely his preserve.
Perhaps the FA don't trust Capello to do what they consider to be 'the right thing' over Terry. They suspect that he will stand by his captain, knowing that Capello values Terry's mental strength and ability to play through personal crisis.
The FA are aware of how the image the England captain portray's reflects on their organisation. Capello is only concerned with winning Euro 2012.
Either way, it highlights the divisions that exist in the England management team. Harmony at the top of the organisation, feeds downwards into the workforce. In this case the players.
Creating a strong management team isn't complicated. But unless you work out from agreed core values, then dis-agreement and independent behaviour will occur.
