Leadership Coaching - Ed Miliband & A Cause

Ed Miliband - Leadership Coaching

A month ago, there was a lot of negative background noise regarding Ed Miliband's leadership of the Labour Party.

He didn't appear to have the charisma, presence and authority that the party were craving for, to take on and defeat the coalition government.

How quickly things can change. The phone hacking scandal, has given him his moment. By being less attached to News International than David Cameron, Miliband has found a cause. Or perhaps a cause has found him.

Without a cause, Miliband had no real identity or character that people could relate to. With it, he has found a voice. A voice that speaks on behalf of those who have no voice.

And this is what good political leaders do. They give voice to issues which affect the lives of ordinary people. They become champions on behalf of others. Righting wrongs. Upholding morale standards, values and principles.

By sensing David Cameron's uncomfortability, over his employment of Andy Coulson, Miliband has found a clear target. Thus focused and determined, he has been able to take the running in this debate.

This success will give him a great deal of personal confidence. He now has to cement this position, with further strong and lucid positions over both the issues of the day, and by creating a compelling vision for the future of Britain.

Leadership is about being moved by something greater than yourself. Ed Miliband has found some authority and presence through this cause. Can he now build on it, or was it a happy one-off?
