The Leadership Blog
This leadership coaching blog, comes after a couple of pensioners are refused entry to Colwyn Bay Cricket Club, because they were carrying spoons. To eat their strawberries and cream!
Leadership Coaching - No Spoons!
Mike and Carol Russell have travelled over to Colwyn Bay from Lancashire. They are cricket fans in their seventies. Retired.
For lunch they have brought a tasty treat of strawberries and cream. With cutlery. Spoons.
On arrival at the Colwyn Bay cricket ground, they are searched! Why? Because everyone is subject to searches by security. The super vigilant security discover that the pensioners are carrying metal spoons to eat their dessert.
They are asked to hand over their spoons. Why? Because the ECB, the governing body of cricket, have decreed that metal objects cannot be taken into a cricket ground.
Now for a high intensity international match, perhaps there is a case for carrying out searches on individuals. But a pair of pensioners looking forward to their strawberries and cream!
The security guard will say that they are just doing their job. And they are following orders. But frankly, that just isnt good enough. The Glamorgan County Cricket Club have to inform their security, what constitutes a threat to health and safety. Because the security cannot make such judgements themselves clearly.
They have turned members of staff into robots who follow orders. Unable to make their own decisions. Perhaps because that is precisely what the Glamorgan board are doing, in following the dictates from the ECB.
The Glamorgan board should sit down, and decide exactly how they want to treat visitors to Colwyn Bay and other grounds. In accordance with their core values. If they have any of course!
