Leadership Coaching - Ed Miliband & The Higher Ground
So Ed Miliband's stock continues to slowly rise, as he lands rib-tickling blows on David Cameron in the phone-hacking dispute.
With leadership questions being asked of the Met Police and New Corp, as well as the Prime Minister, it's a perfect time for Miliband to position himself 'above politics'.
Not belonging to the left of his party, or the unions who backed him. Beyond the politicing of Westminster and the point-scoring of PMQ's.
To find a place of leadership that touches a greater humanity. It's about his own core values. What he truly feels and believes in. Not politically. That domain is too tainted to offer up anything new.
And not the 'born-again' religous zealotry of Tony Blair. But something that is found in great inspirational leaders. They feel what we feel. Understand what we understand. Yearn for what we yearn for. And communicate in such an emotive way, that we know that they know.
It's not about being a do-gooder. But a force for good. And it happens when something gets into you, that won't let go. Somehow, a greater or deeper sense of humanity and soulfulness, that is both fortifying and vulnerable.
As a leader, you have to trust your instinct. And take the path that perhaps is less trodden. But isn't that what leadership is about? To walk the path that others daren't take.
Right now, the opportunity is opening up for Ed Miliband to take that leadership path. It will take courage; boldness and trust. And it won't be easy.
But if Ed Miliband wants to be a force for good in the world, the door is opening wide for him. Beyond hypocrisy. Beyond politics. It's the marriage of vision, mission, values, behaviour and belief.
In a time of change, expect the unexpected!
