The Leadership Coach's Blog
This leadership coach's blog, comes as Rupert Murdoch issues an apology in the papers, for the behaviour of his organisation.
Leadership - Rupert Murdoch: I'm Sorry!
So News Corp have hired a PR company. There can be no other reason for the full page apology going out in this week-ends papers. It smells of a PR strategy.
For apologies clearly don't come naturally to Rupert Murdoch and his board.
For if they did, Murdoch himself would have been on the plane last week to England to meet and apologise personally to the Dowler family.
Once he knew of the hacking of Millie Dowler's phone, his values instinct would have been alerted. He would have known instantly, that his employees had acted inappropriately and gone out of his way to re-establish the core values of the business.
But if the core values are profit dominated, then it becomes hard to think about the hurt caused to people. For in a profit-first culture, people are simply there to serve the god of the dollar and the yen.
Ed Miliband is correct when he says that Rupert Murdoch 'doesn't get it'. That's because the Australian's behaviour is 'outward-driven', rather than 'inward-reflective'.
Now that Dr. Reality has come to town, it gives Murdoch a chance to reflect on the behaviour of employees at News International. And maybe he will ponder the cynical, un-ethical manner in which 'news' is gathered.
If he is values-driven, he could create a clear code of conduct, that puts openess and honesty at the heart of News Corp core values. But Murdoch needs to feel a deep sense of personal hurt, at what his employees have done, for such redemption to be possible.
