This leadership coach's blog, looks at the crisis engulfing Rupert Murdoch and his New Corp organisation.

Leadership - Rupert Murdoch: Extremely Well Done!

Rupert Murdoch - Leadership CoachingIt's media mogul Rupert Murdoch talking to his newspaper The Wall St Journal. Murdoch describes his firms handling of the crisis surrounding New Corp, as 'we have done extremely well'.

Most observers will view the tycoon's comments with disbelief. Barely an hour goes by without a negative story emerging around New Corp. It appears as if Dr Reality has finally come to town.

Perhaps Murdoch genuinely believes, that he and his colleagues are on top of things. If so, this mindset is in alignment with the whole scandal. That, in popular parlance, 'on his watch', serious invasion of privacy issues took place.

The working culture at News Corp is set by the leader and his team. They create the environment that both allows work to get done, and sets the tone for the manner in which the work is done. This is what leaders do. The business must reflect their personal values.

A good leader will be aware of loose-canons in the business. People who negate those values. The leaders team will uphold the same values as the leader and will be vigilant upon any  betrayal of those values.

So we must assume that phone-hacking in some way, is in alignment with Rupert Murdoch's values. That is, it doesnt matter how you get the story, just get it. And don't tell me how you did it!

To perceive that his team have handled the crisis 'extremely well', suggests a leader out of touch with reality. In the same way, that he appears to be out of touch with the behaviour of his employees.

Dr. Reality has come to town. But it's not clear if Rupert Murdoch is aware of his presence.
